My graduate and post-graduate education, work as a clinician, and scholarship have all focused on the interface between the mind and the body. Alcoholism and the broader subject of addictions, a subarea within the wider context of mind and body interface, was my initial career focus. I continue to write articles on addictions, to consult, and to teach courses on addiction. Indeed, much of my recognition within the social work professional community, as evidenced by invited publications and presentations, has derived from my expertise in addictions. However, biological science has surged in recent years, offering new insights into both emotional life and brain processes. I concluded that it is no longer possible to ignore this new understanding when discussing mental health treatment. So I embarked on a program of study, over many years, developing sufficient competence in areas such as biochemistry and physiology to enable me to critically read the literatures in neuroscience and the burgeoning field of psychoneuroimmunology. In 2007, I completed a Masters degree in Biology (Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry). I've published a number of articles on the mind-body interface and expect to continue contributing to that area.
